[australia] Why home grown CMS?

Absolutely agree!
That being said, it's fair to say that most of the 140+ products in
the Australian marketplace started out being "home grown" solutions
(typically in web agencies). Once these have been used, somewhat
successfully, in a few projects, there comes the point when the
organisation says: "hey, I think we may have a *product* here!".
The real challenge is then to become good at the "product" stuff,
and not just the coding. For vendors, this includes release management,
QA testing, upgrade mechanisms, support plans, project management,
etc, etc.
I know of several CMS vendors at the moment that have become seriously
unstuck due to rapid growth highlighting their shortcomings in the
area of "product" fundamentals...
Cheers,
James
